Working as a teacher

In the Netherlands – as in many other countries - the teaching profession is a regulated profession. This means that only those in possession of certain qualifications are allowed to practice the profession concerned. Therefore, teachers trained abroad must always have their foreign qualification(s) recognized, before they are allowed to work as a teacher in the Netherlands. Recognition is a prerequisite for obtaining a Dutch teaching qualification and a permanent position as a teacher at a Dutch school.

There is one exception to the prerequisite of recognition: nationals of EU member states who wish to practice their profession as a teacher on a temporary (occasional) basis, submission of a written declaration to that effect will suffice. Although you must comply with certain requirements, there is no need to file an application for recognition of your foreign qualification(s).
